Originally published in 1993, City of Darkness: Life in Kowloon Walled City remained in print for nearly 20 years – until it was superseded by City of Darkness Revisited. As mentioned in the foreword of that original edition: “photographers Greg Girard and Ian Lambot spent four years exploring the City, interviewing many of its inhabitants and photographing them at work or in their homes”, and some 320 of these photographs – many not carried forward to the new edition – were included, “to create an extraordinary portrait of a unique community, now vanished forever”.
Created in a pre-digital age, this edition and its numerous softback reprints were all produced from the printer’s original set of films, which were used one last time for this Special Reprint. Hardbound and delivered in an exact reproduction of the jacket in which the book first appeared, just 500 copies of the Special Reprint were produced.
